Sebastian Shaw was born to a poor family in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, but by his twenties had built himself a financial empire — Shaw Industries. Shaw Industries enjoyed many ties to the U.S. Government, producing weapons for military agencies and upgrading the Sentinel robots.

The tycoon was invited to join the elite Hellfire Club and quickly worked his way into a position within the Inner Circle. Shaw ousted the then-current leader of the Circle, the White King.
Shaw is now recognized as the Black King, leader of the Inner Circle and Hellfire Club. Along with the White Queen, Emma Frost, Shaw uses the organization’s prestigious connections to further his goals of world domination through political and economic means.

What Doesn’t Kill You…

Shaw is an Alpha-Level Mutant with the primary ability of Energy Absorption — by absorbing and metabolizing kinetic energy, Shaw significantly enhances his own physical strength, speed, durability, and stamina.

This extreme power makes Shaw incredibly difficult to defeat in combat, as each blow struck against him only makes him stronger. Shaw is capable of absorbing all forms of energy (including electrical, magical, explosive, etc.), but kinetic energy works the best.

He underwent the Mothervine enhancement process to cause a secondary mutation which further improved his already potent abilities. This neurochemical augmentation has caused his newfound power to drain energy from any and all sources beyond merely kinetic — even draining his own bio-energy, causing his body to deteriorate at an accelerated pace.
